  • Malus florentina: getting to know the plant

    Florentine apple tree; Hybrid Apple; Malosorbo;

    Malus florentina (Zuccagni) Zucch.) CK Schneider

    Family: Rosaceae

    (sub. Fam.Pomoideae)

    The Florentine apple tree is a small native apple tree, very beautiful and elegant, with splendid white / gold flowering, nice palmate leaves that in autumn tinge with orange, yellow and red and small, autumnal fruits, more similar, in size, to cherries than to apples.

    Despite these beautiful characteristics, the species is almost unknown and rare in nature, to the point of appearing in the red list of Italian species at risk of extinction.

    I propose an BIOLOGICAL plant in a 1 liter pot and 2 years of age.

    Reproduced starting from the seed, collected from the few natural stations, which we discovered in the Bolognese Apennines. Frugal, adaptable to all soils and exposures, it tolerates warm but also rigid climates well.

    It does not require irrigation, except for the first year of planting. In the first years, it eventually takes advantage of generous watering and fertilization, giving greater growth.

    The fruit is eaten like the Sorbe, after amalgamation, because when it is crunchy it is too acid and astringent.

    It has a very particular, delicate and persuasive aroma and taste.

    It can therefore be consumed fresh or prepared, in pure or mixed juices and jams.
